Nuakhai Festival or Nuakhai or Nuankhai (also known as Nabanna observed in coastal Odisha) is an agricultural festival mainly observed by people of western Odisha in India. This festival is celebrated to welcome the new rice of the season. According to the Hindu calendar, it is observed on Panchami tithi (fifth day) of the lunar fortnight of the month of Bhadrapada or Bhadra (August–September), the day after the Ganesh Chaturthi festival. This is the most important social festival of Western Odisha.

Nuakhai Meaning

Nuakhai is a combination of two words, the word nua means new, and khai means food, so the festival is to celebrate the newly harvested rice by the farmers. It is also known as Nuakhai Parab or Nuakahi Bhetghat and is seen as a new ray of hope, held the day after the Ganesha Chaturthi festival. It has a big significance for farmers and the agricultural community. The festival is celebrated at a particular time of day which is called lagan. Arisa pitha is prepared to celebrate this festival. When the lagan comes, the people first remember their village god or goddess and then have their nua.

Nuakhai is the agricultural festival of both the tribal people as well as the caste-Hindus. The festival is observed throughout Odisha, but it is particularly important in the life and culture of the tribal-dominated area of western Odisha. It is a festival for the worship of food grain and is mostly celebrated in the Kalahandi, Sambalpur, Balangir, Bargarh, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sonepur, Boudh, and Nuapada districts of Odisha.

Nuakhai Festival History

Although the festival’s origins have been lost over time, the oral history dates back to the 12th century AD, when the first Chauhan King Ramai Deo founded the princely kingdom of Patna, which is now part of Western Orissa’s Balangir district.

Raja Ramai Deo recognized the need for settled agriculture in his quest to establish an independent kingdom because the local people’s subsistence economy was mainly centered on hunting and food collecting. He concluded that this economy could not generate the surpluses needed to keep a state afloat.

During state formation in the Sambalpuri region, Nuakhai as a ritual festival played a major role in promoting agriculture as a way of life. Thus credit can be given to Raja Ramai Deo for making Nuakhai a symbol of Sambalpuri culture and heritage.

There was no fixed day for the festival’s celebration in the early years. It took place during Bhadraba Sukla Pakhya. It was when the newly grown Kharif crop of rice started ripening. There are reasons for observing the festival in the month of Bhadrava even though the food grain is not ready for harvesting. The thought is to present the grain to the presiding deity before any bird or animal pecks at it and is ready for eating.

The Nuakhai festival teaches the current generation about the importance of agriculture and farmers’ role in the country’s development.

Nuakhai Festival Rituals

People in Western Odisha start preparations for the festival 15 days in advance. Nuakhai is understood to have nine colors and as a consequence, nine sets of rituals are followed as a prelude to the actual day of celebration. These nine colors include:

Beheren – announcement of a meeting to set the date
Lagna dekha (setting the exact date for partaking of new rice)
Daka haka (invitation)
Sapha sutura and lipa puchha (cleanliness)
Ghina bika (purchasing)
Nua dhan khuja (looking for the new crop)
Bali paka (final resolve for Nuakhai by taking the Prasad (the offering) to the deity)
Nuakhai (eating the new crop as Prasad after offering it to the deity, followed by dancing and singing)
Juhar bhet (respect to elders)

If there is one festival that is associated with Odisha worldwide, it is the Ratha Yatra. There is not a person in Odisha who does not know about this festival or hasn’t heard of it. It is Odisha’s most devout, pious, and divine affair that is celebrated by millions of devotees across Odisha every year.

Rath Yatra 2023 Date

Rath Yatra 2023 commences on Tuesday, 20 June 2023, and Bahuda Yatra falls on Wednesday, 28 June 2023.

Jagannath Rath Yatra

Odisha is the land of Lord Jagannath and the Srimandir or the Lord Jagannath temple in Puri is one of the Char Dhams – the four major holy shrines of Hindus, which are considered the most pious temples which all Hindus must visit at least once.

The Lord Jagannath temple in Puri is restricted to people of other religions i.e. non-Hindus, hence people who are not Hindu may not receive the darshan of the Lord if they wish to do so inside the temple. This is the reason that the Ratha Yatra is held once a year, to allow everybody to receive the darshan of the Lord when he steps out of his abode and travels to his aunt’s home i.e. the Gundicha Temple.

Ratha Yatra, literally meaning Chariot Festival, observes the procession and travel of Lord Jagannath and his two siblings, Balabhadra and Subhadra, to their aunt’s home at the Gundicha temple. The Ratha Yatra has been celebrated for thousands of years, with legends behind it appearing in the sacred Hindu Puranas and other writings about its origins. Some of the important legends are below.

In Dwapara Yuga, Demon Kansa who is the maternal uncle of Lord Krishna and Balram invited both of them to Mathura, to kill them. So he sent Akrur with a chariot to Gokul. Lord Krishna and Balram sat on the chariot and left for Mathura. This day of departure is known among devotees as Rath Yatra.

In another legend, the King of Puri, Indrayumna, dreamt that Lord Krishna’s body floated to the shore in the form of a log. King Indrayumna decided to build a grand temple in honor of Lord Krishna and his two siblings, however, he needed somebody to craft idols from the log. It is then that Vishwakarma, the Hindu demigod who is an architect, arrived at Indrayumna’s doorstep and agreed to craft the idols. When he didn’t come out of his workshop for weeks, an impatient Indrayumna barged through the door. The idols were incomplete and Vishwakarma had disappeared. However, Indrayumna believed that they had been made by a demigod and thus sanctified them and established them within the temple.

Hence, the idols of Lord Jagannath and his siblings are made of wood, resin, and cloth. As the idols disintegrate after a while, every 12 years they are remade in the same ‘incomplete’ way as they appeared in the story.

Lord Jagannath is worshipped in Odisha as the “Living God”. All rituals and traditions that are performed in his worship also include daily activities such as taking a bath, getting dressed up, having food, going to bed, etc. Hence, in the case of Ratha Yatra, there is an entire sequence of events that takes place, and which justifies the rituals and traditions of the Yatra. It is believed that when the Lord and his siblings grow tired of the incessant summer heat, they take a long bath on the day of Snana Purnima, for which they catch a cold and are advised to stay isolated.

After completing the isolation period of 15 days which is called ‘Anshan’ or ‘Anabasara’, Lord Jagannath wishes to step out of his house for which the siblings decide to take a trip to the Gundicha Temple, which is the abode of Lord Jagannath’s aunt. While the Lord Jagannath is traveling, anybody and everybody have the liberty to see him, worship him, and offer their obeisances. It is a popular belief that if one pulls on the ropes of the Lord’s chariot, then he is absolved of all his sins. Thousands of devotees tug the ropes of the chariot, which are tied to the wheels. The Lord with his siblings and priests stays at the Gundicha temple for 9 days.

Bahuda Yatra

The return journey of Lord Jagannath and his siblings is called the ‘Bahuda Yatra’. The entourage stops at the Mausi Maa Mandira (abode of another aunt of Lord Jagannath), where he accepts his aunt’s offering of Poda Pitha, which is a favorite sweet delicacy of the Lord. The entire festival is full of such life-like rituals and traditions, which make the festival all the more relatable to human life in general. Lord Jagannath is considered by Hindus the Lord of the Universe and commands incredible devotion and piety from his followers. Devotees believe that he who has seen the Ratha Yatra shall be released from the cycle of life and death and shall attain “Mukti”.

When is Raja Festival celebrated?

Raja is celebrated for 3 days in June-mid, from 14th-16th June. The extreme heat of the months before it is calmed down in June with the advent of the South-West Monsoon, which brings with it the festival of jubilation and celebration. Raja has deep significance for the primarily agricultural community of Odisha, as it is believed to bring rainfall and hence irrigation for their crops.

Why Raja Festival is celebrated

Raja is an important festival, especially in today’s times, as it celebrates womanhood and the menstrual cycle. The word Raja is derived from Rajaswala, meaning menstruation. The festival has contributed to raising awareness about the menstrual cycle and accepting it throughout the ages. It is believed that Mother Earth herself is “menstruating” during these 3 days, and hence no agricultural activities like tilling, sowing, or construction are carried out during this period of time. Young girls are pampered by their parents, given sweet treats to eat, new dresses to wear, and allowed to play and make merry all day long. After 3 days of celebration, Mother Earth is symbolically given a bath called Basumati Gaadhua and then prayed for a prosperous agricultural year ahead.

How is Raja Festival celebrated?

Raja is observed for 3 days, primarily by young girls and womenfolk. Women are given relief from their daily household chores like cooking, sweeping, cleaning, etc. Young girls bedeck themselves with beautiful ornaments and new clothes on the occasion of Raja.

Women are pampered by their families during this auspicious time with varied sweets like Poda Pitha, Arisa Pitha, Kakra Pitha, Sara Puli, Chhena Poda, Chhena Puli, Saru Chakuli, and a variety of other traditional Odia sweets. A popular gift for girls is a pair of anklets made out of silver, as well as other ornaments. Women play cards and make merry together for the 3 days that are celebrated as Pahili Raja, Raja Sankranti, and Sesa Raja.

An important Raja ritual is the building of swings for young girls everywhere, whether it is outdoors or just outside the house. Girls and young women play on these swings and enjoy the days which are dedicated to them.

Festivals are meant to have fun and celebrate traditions, however, this festival also serves the purpose of educating children about their vibrant culture and practices, and their wonderful history. Raja is no different. Through a festival that celebrates womanhood, the Odia society has managed to do away with the taboo topic i.e. the menstrual cycle, and normalized having conversations on this topic.
