Upon reviewing the drinking water situation, for the second time in the past two weeks, I am satisfied with the progress. Said CM Naveen Patnaik.

In this scorching summer, ensuring assured supply of safe and potable drinking water to people is both – a challenge & a commitment for the Government. I have been monitoring the situation, overseeing ongoing works, directing expeditious action and ensuring redressal of every complaint on a daily basis.

We have set a target to ensure piped water supply to all Panchayats of the State by 2017. Repairing facility for water pumps is being made available 24×7 and supplies have been augmented with additional tankers. I am happy that the number of piped water supply projects in the State has risen from 459 in the year 2000 to over 10,000 in 2016. Hand pumps & production tube wells are now being set up at a faster pace than ever before. Tube wells will be sunk in 27,711 partially connected habitations.

In the last two weeks 100 piped drinking water projects in rural Odisha along with 100 more in 45 urban areas were dedicated to the people. These projects will benefit 2.7 lakh people in urban areas and 1.72 lakh people in rural areas. Besides ensuring safe piped water supply, we also deployed 33,191 and 1,100 water tankers in urban and rural areas respectively.

My Government accords the highest priority to development of drinking water infrastructure with focus on reaching the most vulnerable sections across rural and urban areas. An allocation of Rs 700 crore has been made for development of drinking water infrastructure. This includes the surplus of the previous Finance Commission. Every Panchayat will spend at least 30% of the Finance Commission grants on drinking water projects. District Collectors have been advised to intensify construction of check dams and water harvesting structures through MGNREGS & Gopabandhu Gramin Yojana.

With all these efforts, one should not forget the significance of conserving water. I call upon you to do your bit. It is every small effort put together that can make a significant impact to achieve our goals, just as drops of water only make an ocean.
