Posco land acquisition resumes, 21 betel veins demolished

JAGATSINGHPUR Apr 22. The Jagatsinghpur district administration on Monday resumed land acquisition for the proposed Posco steel plant in Kujanga area at least 21 betel vineyards were acquired and compensation in the tune of Rs 23 Lakh paid to the betel vein losers, villagers gave up their betel veins voluntarily and the land acquired peacefully without any resistance by the project opponents, district collector S K Mallick informed.
Official sources said government representatives demolished two betel veins at Govindapur village on Sunday restarting the land take over for the Posco after two and half months and continued on Monday, district collector and superintendent of police armed with 2 platoon police forces were present at the spot.
The civil administration was forced to stop land acquisition work in the second week of February due to stiff resistance from the project opponents and a section of villagers as consequence state government had apparently decided to go slow on acquiring land for the 12 billion US dollar FDI project.
The district administration has already so far acquired about 250 acres land after demolishing 55 betel veins during the land take over process conducted in the early February and another 500 acres land was proposed to acquire. Acting on the requirements we began the land acquisition from Monday will continue until the required land is occupied, informed district collector.
