Supreme Court Refuses to Postpone GATE 2022; Exam To Be Held As Scheduled

The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed petitions seeking postponement of Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE 2022) exams amid the ongoing COVID pandemic.

The Bench observed that delaying exams may cause chaos and uncertainty among aspirants. The exams will be held in the physical mode as per the existing schedule on February 5, 6, 12, and 13.

Earlier, about 11 GATE candidates had moved the apex court with an appeal to instruct the central government and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur—which organizes the exam every year—to defer the exam dates in view of the spike in Covid cases across the country.

According to sources, a Bench comprising Justices DY Chandrachud, Surya Kant, and Vikram Nath observed that taking any action on the PILs barely 48 hours prior to the exam would lead to uncertainty.
